Avengers Campus Takes a New Direction

Avengers Campus immerses guests into the ever-changing Marvel Multiverse at Disney’s California Adventure park. At the D23 Expo on September 11th, Chairman of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Josh D’Amaro addressed the progress of the third attraction of the land. What once was going to be a thrilling Quinjet adventure to the Black Panther’s kingdom of Wakanda, has taken a new direction. His answer, in short, was that we should expect to see great things in Avengers Campus’ future surrounding the Marvel Multiverse.

I Didn’t Even Know There Was a Quinjet Ride!

With the announcement of Avengers Campus replacing Bugs Land at California Adventure, Disney Imagineers described the two-phase project and two new attractions. The retheming of the Hollywood Tower of Terror became the third attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout. Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure was the first new attraction, a first-of-its-kind web-shooting mission using state-of-the-art motion-sensing technology from the ride vehicle. The phase two attraction promised to be a thrilling E-Ticket mission to Wakanda to help the Avengers fight Thanos’ forces of evil.

What Should We Expect in the Multiverse?

The new attraction (which has not been named) is said to be including everyone’s favorite characters from the Multiverse. Included in the concept art are characters we’ve only seen on Disney+ in the Marvel series. The attraction’s primary villain will be King Thanos, a villain who succeeded in one of the many timelines in the Multiverse.

This could of course be a trackless ride utilizing screen technology to immerse us in the character’s worlds, or it could be something more, based on a new patent recently filed for a “Glasses-Free” VR Attraction. While this is only speculation right now, the ride vehicles would utilize 3D effects similar to how the holographic effect on Rise of the Resistance and Pepper’s Ghost models on the Haunted Mansion work.

“A controller operates the projector assembly to project left and right eye images toward the projection screen. The left and right eye images are then directed to left and right eye positions so a viewer with eyes positioned at the left and right eye positions receives a virtual object concurrently with light from the physical scenic space.”
