Disneyland Celebrates 70th Anniversary with New Verse for It’s A Small World

It's A Small World

Today, Disneyland marked its 70th anniversary with a celebration steeped in nostalgia, innovation, and heartfelt tributes. Among the most touching additions was a new lyric for the beloved attraction “It’s a Small World,” penned by Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman before his passing—a final gift to fans that echoes the ride’s enduring message of unity and hope.

A Legacy Reimagined

Originally written for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, “It’s a Small World” has become one of Disney’s most iconic songs, known for its simple melody and powerful message of global harmony. The Sherman Brothers—Richard and Robert—crafted a tune that transcended language and borders, and now, Richard’s final verse adds a poetic coda to that legacy.

The New Verse:

“Mother Earth unites us in heart and mind
And the love we give makes us humankind
Through our vast wondrous land
When we stand hand in hand
It’s a small world after all.”

This verse now plays in the finale scene of the attraction at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, seamlessly woven into the familiar chorus. It’s subtle enough that casual riders might miss it, but for longtime fans, it’s a poignant reminder of the values Walt Disney championed: kindness, connection, and imagination.

More Than a Lyric: A Tribute in Film

To honor the Sherman Brothers’ legacy, Disneyland also debuted “The Last Verse”, a short film playing daily at the Main Street Cinema. The film explores the story behind the new lyric and celebrates the brothers’ contributions to Disney music—from Mary Poppins to The Jungle Book.

In a world that often feels divided, this new verse is more than just a musical update—it’s a gentle call to remember what binds us together. Richard Sherman’s son, Gregg, shared that the lyric was written to “celebrate that there’s more that unites us than divides us,” reinforcing the timeless message of the attraction.

As Disneyland continues to evolve, this lyrical addition reminds us that even in the smallest of worlds, love and unity can make the biggest impact.
